The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) is addressing the concerns of eighty-four percent of manufacturing executives who indicate the nation is now facing a critical “skills gap”, according to new research from Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute.

To address these challenges, AME along with other leading organizations has been deploying a North American initiative to Adopt-a-School on national Manufacturing Day to attract and prepare students for rewarding careers in advanced technology, logistics, and manufacturing

This initiative is designed to provide high school and college students with access to valuable educational resources and constructive hands-on learning experiences. The AME Adopt-a-School Program connects students and their schools with manufacturers in their area to give them an in-depth look at the world of advanced technology, logistics, and manufacturing.

San Antonio was one of the first communities to deploy the AME Adopt-a-School Program. Douglas Carlberg, AME Southwest Board and member the San Antonio Manufacturers Association (SAMA), reached out to the Alamo Academies to join the program.

The Alamo Academies, a community collaborative non-profit organization in partnership with industry, the Alamo Colleges, area high schools and local cities, is a nationally renowned program that has opened doors to hundreds of high school students with college-level training. Alamo Academies, through mentorship, skill building and more, provides high school students with a pathway into advanced manufacturing careers. Program graduates earn high school and college credit, obtain industry-approved certifications and participate in an eight-week paid summer internship.

To assist in students on their career pathways journey AME is offering a free student membership to young adults who would like to learn about the exciting and rewarding careers that are being offered in advance technology, logistics, and manufacturing.

Gene Bowman, Alamo Academies Executive Director said, “We are honored to be selected by the AME in their Adopt-a-School program.  In addition, through our partnership with SAMA, the Alamo Academies is able to provide through this unique career pathway the opportunity for the young men and women in the San Antonio to achieve their “American Dream”.
